Three people are in hospital after a truck slammed into the side of a bus carrying 10 passengers in Melbourne’s north-east this morning.

Police believe the bus was travelling through the intersection of Foote Street and Williamsons Road in Templestowe around 11.50am when it was t-boned by a truck.

“I thought death straight away with that big hole in the side of the bus,” a witness told 9NEWS.

After being trapped for nearly an hour on the bus a man in his 40s was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with a broken leg.

He and a passenger from the bus and the truck driver were taken to various hospitals in a stable condition.

“It’s fortunate there was no-one seated where the impact occurred,” a police spokesman said, noting the significant damage to the side of the bus.

The bus company has commended the driver of the bus for assisting passengers before emergency services arrived.

The damaged vehicles were towed from the crash scene this afternoon.

Investigations into whether the truck’s brakes failed are ongoing.
