The husband of a Melbourne breast cancer patient has pleaded for car thieves who stole his wife's crucial medical records to come forward.

Two men allegedly broke into  Stephen Treharne's Port Melbourne home at about 3.40am on Saturday while he, his wife Latrice, and their four children were asleep and stole three mobile phones, a credit card and two cars.

A copy of 41-year-old Mrs Treharne's most recent CT scan was in the back of their stolen Mini Cooper.

"It does take the wind out of the sails, greatly," Mr Treharne told 9NEWS.

"Her mental wellbeing is just as important as her physical wellbeing and this doesn't help."

Mr Treharne said the thieves also went into their 12-year-old daughter's room.

"Going into their rooms and taking all their stuff ... is gut-wrenching," he said.

Authorities said they spotted the allegedly stolen vehicles being driven on Station Street around 3.55am, but when they tried to stop them, the drivers sped off.

Investigators allege the offenders drove to a convenience store on the Western Highway in Rockbank and filled up one of the vehicles with fuel, paying with the stolen credit card.

Police have released images of two men, believed to be in their 20s, they would like to speak to as well as photos of the stolen vehicles - a Nissan Patrol with registration SDT and a white Mini Cooper with registration AFA 803.

Anyone who can assist with this investigation is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
