The elderly woman accused of stabbing her ex-husband to death at his apartment has faced a Melbourne Court.

Renee Louise Nolan, 69, did not apply for bail when she appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning charged with murdering ex-husband, Harold Nolan.

Mr Nolan's body was found by police in a bed at his Mitcham unit yesterday.

Police said emergency services were alerted to the alleged crime scene by Mrs Nolan.

She barely whispered "yes" when asked whether she understood the court process today.

Her legal aid lawyer said it was Mrs Nolan’s first time in custody and asked that she be seen by a psychiatric nurse.

Police will lodge items for forensic analysis before Mrs Nolan returns to court on February 28.
