A driver has been airlifted to hospital after a rare muscle car hit a tree in a crash near the regional Queensland town of Gympie.

Three people were inside the Ford Mustang Shelby GT when it left the road and hit the tree in Amamoor at about 3.30pm.

The muscle car smashed into the tree on the passenger side, trapping all three inside the sought-after vehicle.

Images taken by RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews showed the dark grey car resting on its side up against the tree trunk, with major damage to its passenger side and roof.

A 26-year-old man, who was a passenger, sustained suspected chest and leg injuries and was airlifted to Nambour Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver and another passenger were treated by paramedics and taken to the same hospital by road for further treatment.

Depending on the year of production, Mustang Shelby GTs can fetch well in excess of $120,000 on the second-hand market in Australia.
