A restaurant in India is using a creative way to cut down on food waste and donate to charity at the same time.

The South Indian vegetarian restaurant reportedly makes everything fresh on a daily basis, which ultimately ends with food waste, The Folsom Telegraph reports.

In order to cut down on wasted food, owner Jay Jayaraman uses a special app that gives people the opportunity to collect the extra food at the end of the day.

"We're open from 8am to 10pm and around 9pm we know what is going to be possibly left over," Mr Jayaraman said.

"The restaurant has an app and you have the option to order now or later. In the app you will see the option that says 'Too much food – got to go' and closer to 9pm you will see what we have available."

Customers who order from the "too much food" section are given a 50 percent discount and all the profits reportedly go to a cause close to Mr Jayaraman's heart.

"A few months ago, I read how a family came to America from Afghanistan," he said.

"The first month the family was here, the dad and son were cycling and someone hit them both. The dad died instantly and the son was in serious condition in the hospital,” he said.

Mr Jayaraman is reportedly putting the profits from “too much food” in a trust fund for the family.
