A 16-month-old baby is in a critical condition in hospital after being diagnosed with a case of invasive meningococcal disease, SA Health has advised.
The baby is from "metropolitan Adelaide", SA Health said, and multiple people who had contact with the patient have been identified.
"Eight people have been directed to receive antibiotic chemoprophylaxis," an SA Health statement advised.
According to SA Health, there have been 21 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in the state this year, compared to 27 cases recorded at the same time last year. A total of 30 cases were reported in 2015.
More information about meningococcal disease is available on the SA Health website.
