The biggest day of the year isn’t all about the horses. For many, the fashion takes centre stage.

The all-important Myer Fashions on the Field, in its 54th year, was held at the newly created  entertainment venue, ‘The Park’.

More than $360,000 worth of prices are on offer, in what host and model Nikki Phillips called “one of the most prestigious fashion events in the country”.

Judge and Marie Claire publisher Jackie Frank said the Melbourne Cup is all about “fun and colour”.

“We’re looking at the overall look and what the contestant is trying to achieve. Accessories are really important, and just how the whole outfit comes together,” she said.

“People don’t appreciate how hard it is to create an outfit, today it is about making a statement.”

Entrants flew from all over the country and ranged from mothers, jewellery designers and property managers.

The coveted prize for Emirates Melbourne Cup Day Fashions on the Field winner was taken out by Olivia Moor, a jewellery designer who is originally from New Zealand.

She took home a Myer gift card, four nights at the Sofitel on Collins and entry to compete in the Myer Fashions on the Field National Final on Crown Oaks Day.

“I feel like the bell boy from Budapest Hotel,” she said of the dress made by her mother.

Her sister, Charlotte, took out third place, and second was awarded to Yvette Hardy.
