Nearly 2000 cyclists took to the streets in Adelaide today to raise awareness for road safety in memory of Australian track cyclist Amy Gillet.

Amy’s Ride is creating awareness for cyclist road safety in Australia after Adelaide woman Ms Gillet was killed by a driver while training in Germany in 2005.

Cyclists participating in today’s fundraising event could choose between six different courses, but according to organisers, many decided to take on the 120km route along Adelaide’s southern suburbs into McLaren Vale.

Organisers are aiming to raise $20,000 from this year’s ride, with the money going towards road safety.

"We think a lot about Amy's legacy and her but we also think about safe cycling," Ms Gillet's mother, Mary Safe, said.

Ms Gillet was killed and five of her teammates were seriously injured when a young German driver lost control of his car and struck the cycling team.
