A 27-year-old man accused of drunkenly assaulting a sailor on Anzac Day has pleaded not guilty in a Sydney court.

Police allege Able Seaman Corey Evans was in full uniform when he was punched in the nose and left bloodied by Guy Abbott on April 25.

The combat officer described his own account of events in the Campbelltown Local Court today.

"I heard the words 'gay uniform' and 'f-----',” Mr Evans said.

"I turned around to tell him to pull his head in, it's ANZAC Day, and he clocked me."

Mr Abbott had been with a group of friends spotted drinking and swearing on the Sydney train moments before the swing, the court heard.

But Mr Abbott claims he felt threatened by the serving sailor that day, and was forced to defend himself.

"It was just a quick punch. I don't think I even shaped up,” Mr Abbott said.

He has pleaded not guilty to assault and offensive behaviour charges, but admitted to charges over drinking in public.

The hearing continues.
