The second case of measles in 48 hours has been confirmed in the town of Gawler, South Australia.

The infected person is a 33-year-old woman, SA Health's Chief Medical Officer Professor Paddy Phillips confirmed this afternoon.

She remains in a stable condition in hospital.

The new case follows the confirmation of another measles-infected Gawler woman yesterday. The 34-year-old is self-quarantining at her home and is in a stable condition.

“Immunisation is the best protection against measles and it’s vital that everyone has two doses of the vaccine not only to protect themselves but to protect the wider communit,"  Professor Phillips said.

Professor Phillips urged people to be alert to symptoms of measles and to visit their doctor if unsure.

“Measles is highly contagious and can be airborne, so it is easily spread through coughing and sneezing amongst those who are not immunised."

He said people should look for symptoms that include fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a blotchy rash which starts on the head.

There have been 12 confirmed cases of measles in South Australia this year.
