Legendary South Australian radio broadcaster Bob Francis has died aged 77.

Francis died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Adelaide this morning, FIVEaa radio station program director Nic Nolan told The Advertiser.

Francis retired from broadcasting in 2013 after an illustrious 57 years in the industry.

He is widely remembered for bringing The Beatles to the City of Churches in 1964 after instigating a public petition.

In just three days he received 80,000 signatures, securing an iconic visit from the Fab Four.

Many colleagues and media figures have paid tribute to Francis on social media.

“He said what he thought,” FIVEaa weekend breakfast host Mark Aiston tweeted.
