Heath Ledger's personal effects are set to be curated into a free exhibition in Western Australia next year.

Ledger's family has collaborated with the Western Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, helping with displays and handing over personal effects.

On display will be a diary he kept when creating his seminal role as The Joker in the 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight.

The Academy Award he received for the film will also feature.

Born in Perth in 1979, Ledger found a knack for acting while at school, appearing as the lead in a production of Peter Pan.

At 16, he left for Sydney to pursue an acting career, appearing in the 1997 film Blackrock.

His big break was in the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You in 1999, and he was later known for his roles in Brokeback Mountain, A Knight's Tale and The Patriot.

He died in 2008.

Heath Ledger: A Life In Pictures exhibition will be free to the public at the art gallery from October 2017 to January 2018.
