Two sailors have managed to escape their yacht after it capsized at a popular dive site north of North Stradbroke Island.

The 1959-built Clare-D-Lune crashed into rocks at Flat Rock around 3am this morning.

The yacht's 70-year-old skipper and Dutchman Max Keller, 23, managed to deploy a life raft and were rescued by Water Police.

Mr Keller had only been in Australia for a short time and was acting as a deck hand on the yacht.

"I woke up on a rock, basically," he said from back on solid ground today.

Mr Keller said he would continue his Australian trip, despite the scare.

"I'm getting the f--- out of here, Australia is trying to kill me!" he joked.

"Of course I'm going to stay."
