Cricket fans are being assured there will be safe at the upcoming Boxing Day Test after five men were taken into custody over an alleged terror plot to target Melbourne landmarks this Christmas.
Police allege the group planned to use explosives and weapons to attack Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and St Paul's Cathedral on Christmas Day.
Victoria Police will beef up their presence throughout the Christmas holiday period and have spoken to Cricket Australia ahead of the Boxing Day Test.
Additional security will be in place in and around the MCG, chief commissioner Graham Ashton vowed on Friday.
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland also says safety of fans is paramount.
"The safety and security of our fans, players and officials attending any cricket match is our number one priority," he said in a statement.
Police will also have additional patrol at Carols by Candlelight events and New Year's Eve celebrations.
"There's absolutely no question that people should feel confident about going about their business, celebrating Christmas over the next couple of days, celebrating time with family and friends, going to the Boxing Day Test, going to the carols," Police Minister Lisa Neville told 3AW.
"People should feel confident that this is a safe time. The police have neutralised these suspects."
Mr Ashton says there's no intelligence to suggest any threat now the plot has been contained but extra police will be deployed nonetheless to reassure the public.
"These are precautionary measures but it's important that the community is reassured that we are putting these additional resources in place," he said.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is warning people to remain vigilant.
"Victorians should go about their business ... but they should always be aware of their circumstances (and) they should always speak to Victoria Police if they are in anyway concerned about anything," he said.
