Carrie Fisher is in a critical condition after suffering a massive heart attack while on a flight to the US.

The Star Wars actress was flying from London to Los Angeles when she went into a full cardiac arrest.

Her brother, Todd Fisher, said Ms Fisher was "out of emergency" but she was not stable.

"She’s in the ICU and everybody's praying for her," he told Variety.

"There's nothing new from the doctors. There's nothing new at all. ... There's no good news or bad news."

Audio between the United Airlines flight and LAX stated Ms Fisher was "unresponsive" despite several passengers trying to help her.

An EMT sitting in the back of the plane reportedly administered CPR to the 60-year-old Star Wars actress.

The emergency is believed to have occurred 15 minutes before the flight landed in Los Angeles.

Witnesses at LAX said Ms Fisher's eyes were closed and she appeared unconscious after emergency workers spent 15 minutes trying to get a pulse, TMZ reports.

She was seen being rushed through the terminal with an oxygen mask on her face.

The Los Angeles Times said her condition was "critical," quoting an unnamed source who said the actress was "in a lot of distress on the flight".

Ms Fisher was rushed to a nearby hospital by paramedics for treatment after the plane landed shortly before lunchtime.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told nine.com.au they "aggressively" treated a passenger at the terminal.

”At 12:11pm LAFD responded to LAX Airport Gate 74 for a patient on an inbound flight in cardiac arrest. LAFD was standing by for the planes arrival and provided advanced life support and aggressively treated and transported the patient to a local hospital,” a spokesperson told nine.com.au

Actors Brad Gage and Anna Akana were sitting in front of the Star Wars star and said she had stopped breathing.

The American actress has talked and written frequently about her years of drug addiction and mental illness.

She’s currently on tour promoting her book The Princess Diarist, which is behind the scenes recollection of what happened during the filming the first Star Wars movie.

Ms Fisher recently revealed her three-month tryst with co-star Harrison Ford during the filming of A New Hope.

Steeped in Hollywood excess from an early age, she was the product of the four-year marriage of movie star Debbie Reynolds, best-known for her role in "Singin' In The Rain," and singer Eddie Fisher.

The relationship, and the happy home in Beverly Hills, came to an end when Fisher left Reynolds for her close friend, the actress Elizabeth Taylor.

Fisher is also known for her searingly honest semi-autobiographical novels, including her best-selling debut "Postcards from the Edge" which she turned into a film of the same name in 1990.

She has given various interviews over the years about her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and addiction to prescription drugs and cocaine, which she admitted using on the set of "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980).

She has also discussed being treated with electroconvulsive therapy, in which small electric currents are passed through the brain, to trigger brief seizures.
