A Sudanese asylum seeker has died in a Brisbane hospital from injuries suffered after a fall and seizure at Manus Island, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed.
In a statement this afternoon, the department said the 27-year-old man died after he was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital for treatment.
"The man was taken to IHMS Clinic on Manus for urgent treatment. He was then air-lifted to Australia for further medical care. The man died at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital," the statement read.
"The Department is not aware of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and expresses its sympathies to his family and friends.
"The death will be reported to the Queensland Coroner. No further comment will be made at this time."
Earlier, a statement from the Refugee Action Coalition said the man, named as Faysal, had collapsed on Thursday night.
The group said Faysal suffered head injuries in the fall, which was believed to have been caused by an existing medical condition.
"It is not known if the immediate emergency is a result of the head injuries sustained when he collapsed or because of underlying medical conditions that led to his collapse.
"He had suffered numerous black-outs and collapses over the past months."
In April, the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court ruled the Manus Island processing centre illegal and ordered it be shut down.
