A toddler is dead after being run over by a car in the driveway of a western Sydney home on New Year's Eve.

Emergency services were called to a home on Wootten Street, Colyton after the 23-month-old boy was struck by a Mazda 3 just after 7pm.

The boy died at the scene.

The 23-year-old male driver has been taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police said a crime scene had been set up and forensic specialists were investigating.

The tragedy comes one day after a seven-month-old Queensland baby was killed when his mother reversed her car into his pram while leaving a funeral in Brisbane.

Police said today the mother was unlikely to be charged.

"The investigations are ongoing but it's unlikely they're going to charge a mother over something like this," a police spokeswoman said.

The boy's mother was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not hurt, police said.
