A beloved family dog has died after an illegal firework caused it to impale itself on a fence in Melbourne’s south-east.

Labradoodle Max escaped the laundry of his family home in Narre Warren South on New Year’s Eve after a loud explosion went off from a suspected illegal firework.

"He’s escaped out the doggy door and tried to escape over the fence but impaled (himself) instead," family member Gabriella Lysy told 9NEWS.

Ms Lysy’s brother returned home around 10.30pm and discovered the devastating scene.

"The dog wasn't making any noise and wasn't reacting… he was in the state of shock," Ms Lysy said.

Max was rushed to the Hallam Animal Emergency centre with bones broken in four places.

His condition was so bad he had to be put down.

Ms Lysy said Max’s death was a reminder for those using illegal fireworks to be more careful.

"Don’t let off these stupid loud bangs," she said.
