A group of men armed with a gun and hammers is on the run, after holding up a Melbourne jewellery shop and stealing more than $150,000 worth of stock.

Security cameras and dashcams captured the robbery, which began with a masked man entering the back office of H&H Jewellery, on Glen Huntly Road in Elsternwick, early this afternoon.

The man can be seen pointing a handgun at the shop's owner and pushing it into his neck as he orders the safe to be opened, as two female workers crouch under desks.

Three other men then storm the shop, jumping over glass cabinets and smashing the displays with hammers.

They make off with trays of diamond rings, gold chains and bracelets, with a total worth of more than $150,000.

One of the men then yells "let's go", and the trio flees into a waiting getaway car.

The father-of-two held at gunpoint has owned the shop for 18 years. Police said he and his employees were left "shaken and terrified".

As detectives collected evidence at the scene, police learned the getaway car had met up with a second car about 2.5km away, in Gardenia Road, Gardenvale, shortly after the robbery.

Police believe the getaway car was a black sedan without number plates, and was seen in Gardenvale with a black SUV. Investigators have described the four men as being of Sudanese appearance.
