The search for the winner of a $55 million Powerball prize is over, with a large group of Queensland Department of Education workers reportedly sharing the windfall.

Twenty-one workers at the department will each pocket $2.62 million after buying the winning ticket for last night's draw, Fairfax Media reports.

Tatts Group confirmed the division one prize - the second largest in Powerball history - had been claimed and that it was a shared ticket purchased in Brisbane's CBD.

Earlier today, Tatts spokeswoman Elissa Lewis said the winning ticket was not registered and appealed for the winner to come forward.

"If you discover you’re holding one of the division one winning tickets — please keep it in a safe place and phone Tatts Group Lotteries on 131 868 to start the process of claiming your prize," Ms Lewis said, the Courier-Mail reported.

"For the mystery ticket holder who has won the entire $55 million division one prize, when they discover their life changing windfall it will a moment they will never forget."

The prize is the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in Australia's history.

The current record stands at $80 million, which was won in July 2009.
