Former Mexico president Vincente Fox has taken to Twitter to denounce US President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial plans to build a wall along the southwest border of Mexico.

“Trump when will you understand that I am not paying for that f----n’ wall,” a tweet from Mr Fox’s official account read.

“Be clear with US tax payers. They will pay for it,” he wrote.

Mr Fox’s tweet follows reports of further Congress discussion on Mr Trump’s plans to build what he has dubbed the “Great Wall”.

Mr Trump wants money to construct the wall as soon as April, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The President-elect yesterday tweeted that “any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later”.

However, it remains unclear whether US or Mexico’s taxpayers would fund the wall.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s economy ministry, in apparent reference to Mr Trump, has rejected any threats made to deter companies from investing in the country.

Mr Trump this week threatened to slap import tariffs on US automaker General Motors for cars it makes in Mexico and Japan's Toyota for planning a new factory there.

Ford also announced the cancellation of a A$2.1 billion new factory in the northern state of San Luis Potosi, which had been criticised by Mr Trump, though the company said the decision was business-related.

Without mentioning Mr Trump or any government, the economy ministry said in a statement that it "categorically rejects any attempt to influence the investment decisions of companies on the basis of fear or threats".

Mr Trump has vowed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada as well as impose tariffs on companies that ship jobs out of the US.

Mr Fox served as Mexico’s president from 2000 to 2006.
