A woman who was car-jacked during a trip to buy dog food in Brighton, in Melbourne's south-east, said she thought the offenders would kill her.

Danielle Hazan, 42, was driving on Young Street about 1.15am when she noticed a car do a U-turn and begin to follow her.

She then drove down a side street and tried to run to a nearby home, but one of the offenders got out of the car and dragged her back by her hair, and then struck her in the head.

“I didn’t know what these guys wanted. I didn’t even think of a carjacking… I thought they were going to kill me,” Ms Hazan said.

“I was petrified, and I’ve never been that scared in my life.”

One of the men grabbed her car keys before they took off minutes later.

Ms Hazan said she called police and hid in a front yard out of fear the offenders would come back.

The men fled in her Toyota Corolla, which was later involved in a collision with a Holden at the intersection of Glen Huntly Rd and St Kilda Street in Elwood r.

The driver of the second car was uninjured.

The group, described as all being African in appearance, fled the scene in a dark sedan.

No arrests have yet been made.
