The man alleged to have deliberately driven his car through a crowd in Melbourne’s CBD is believed to have been caught on camera interrupting a 9NEWS journalist’s report hours before the attack occurred.

Neary Ty, a 9NEWS Melbourne reporter, was conducting a live cross on the TODAY show this morning when a man stopped his car behind her.

The man could be seen poking his head out of the window of the maroon car and waving a red cap at her.

It is believed the same car was later involved in this afternoon’s fatal Bourke Street attack.

A maroon sedan was filmed doing donuts at the intersection in front of Flinders Street Station before it ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians at the busy Bourke Street Mall.

Ty was reporting on an alleged stabbing which occurred in Windsor this morning, which police believe is linked to the Bourke Street attack.

Police say the alleged offender is now in custody.
