Queensland police are appealing for public assistance to locate a man believed to have been assaulted in Coolangatta earlier this week.

Benjamin Joseph Thornton, 26, is thought to have been assaulted in the carpark near a sports club on Binya Avenue on Tuesday night.

Police believe some type of brawl may have broken out between two groups and have said it’s likely a gun was fired.

A white BMW, which police believe belongs to or is associated with Mr Thornton, is currently in the possession of police.

Initial police investigations indicated a group of men associated with a dark-coloured four wheel drive wagon and a dark-coloured ute were involved in the assault.

Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said police hold “serious concerns” for Mr Thornton’s welfare.

“Police hold grave concerns for his welfare as we believe he may have been injured but we have yet to locate him,” Detective Inspector Hogan said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
