An 18-year-old man has died after he fell 16 storeys from a high-rise balcony in the inner-Sydney suburb of Pyrmont.

Police said a roommate had been performing CPR on the 18-year-old when they arrived at the scene on Saunders Street at 3.20am, but he could not be revived.

It is understood the man had been at a party elsewhere in Sydney before returning to the apartment.

Police said the man fell after venturing onto the balcony on his own.

Acting Inspector Peter Northey said the man had consumed alcohol but his level of intoxication was unknown.

Authorities were already on their way to the unit when the man fell after receiving a noise complaint.

Officers found the man in a central courtyard but he was unable to be revived.

Early indications suggest the man's death was an accident, with police saying it may have been a result of "misadventure".

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
