A man on bail has been charged after leading police on a pursuit which left a woman injured in Melbourne’s north.

Police allege the man was driving his ute erratically with false license plates about 11.20pm last night in Preston.

The man’s vehicle allegedly swerved towards a sergeant, initiating a pursuit.

He then allegedly sped through a red light at the intersection of Victoria and Bell Streets and smashed into another car, seriously injuring a 41-year-old woman.

She was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Her 15-year-old passenger was uninjured.

Witness Saad Nisar told 9NEWS the crash was “very loud”.

The man was this afternoon charged with endangering life, driving whilst disqualified, evading police, and display false plates.

He is expected to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court later today.

The police pursuit will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command.

Earlier, Inspector Stuart McGregor said the man now faces a “really long jail term”.

“Really when you think about it, it could’ve been any one of us going through that intersection at that time when this pursuit happened,” Insp. McGregor said.

“This didn’t have to happen, all he had to do was stop and now he’s looking at a really long jail term.
