More than 500 members of an extended Chinese family have posed for a family photo that tops all others.

The Ren family had been planning the impressive photograph for more than two years.

It was eventually held during the Lunar New Year period in front of basalt formations in Shishe, part of Lianping County in China's north.

Ironically, Ren means "reunion" in Chinese.

Photographer Zhang Liangzong used a drone to take the picture of the 500-strong Ren clan.

The Ren family originates from the village and can be traced back as far as 850 years, he told the BBC.

However, it has been eight decades since the family tree was last updated.

Village elders recently began the task of tracking down descendants - of which there were at least 2000 who are still alive.

More than 500 members of the Ren family managed to make the trip from Beijing, Shanghai, Xinjiang and Taiwan.

Village chief Ren Tuanjie spoke to Chinese state news agency Xinhua that there were multiple reasons for staging such a large-scale reunion.

"One reason was to understand where our descendants have spread to, where they have ended up and where they live, to account to our ancestors," he said.

"Another reason was also to let descendants all over the country know their roots, so that wherever they go they will not forget where they come from."
