A father-of-two remains in a critical condition after being mauled by a shark in Far North Queensland this morning.

Glenn Dickson, 25, was bitten on the left leg while spearfishing near the popular Eva Rock near Hinchinbrook Island, off the coast of Cardwell.

Mr Dickson’s three friends came to the rescue, quickly applying a tourniquet to his seriously wounded limb.

"The initial actions by the three friends have definitely saved this gentleman's life," Cardwell ambulance officer Martin Taylor said.

Mr Dickson remains in a critical condition but is expected to survive, according to ambulance officer Neil Noble.

"We believe that he may have a very positive outcome," Mr Noble said this afternoon.

There are unconfirmed reports the shark was either a bull shark or a tiger shark.
