A factory fire in Sydney’s west that shrouded the city with a plume of black smoke could continue to burn for days.

The Chullora fire is contained but could continue to smoulder for several more days with firefighters unable to enter the building.

More than 120 firefighters struggled to contain the blaze yesterday after receiving an emergency call at 9.21am.

Plastics, carpet, cardboard and paper inside the Waste Service Recycling plant on Muir Road, Chullora continue to fuel the fire, a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman told AAP.

"We can't go in there because the roof's collapsed. It's too dangerous to go inside," he said.

A FRNSW spokesman earlier told 9NEWS a remote control water cannon had been sent inside the smouldering factory to help cool down sections of the site that were inaccessible to emergency crews.

The large complex handles batteries, oil, metals, paint and solvents and electrical equipment, according to the SUEZ Chullora Resource Recovery Park website.

The fire was upgraded from an “Alarm Eight” to an “Alarm 10” yesterday as flames engulfed the building due to issues accessing water

All workers in the plant were evacuated and accounted for.
