Police have arrested Nghi Le, 33, who is believed to have shot at officers during a drug raid in the Melbourne suburb of St Albans this morning.
Mr Le, a Vietnamese national, allegedly shot a handgun as authorities stormed the home on Levenia Street about 10am.
Still armed, he then fled the scene, and remained on the run until just after 4pm, when he handed himself into police.
“He managed to sneak out very quickly under the cover of darkness,” Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontanta said earlier.
Mr Le was on bail for drug-related matters and had been known to police, Comm. Fontana added.
Today’s raid was part of a wider drug sting, dubbed “Operation Sea Dragon”, targeting an international drug syndicate.
Properties in Sunshine, Maribyrnong, Cairnlea and the city’s CBD were raided at the same time.
Police said a clandestine laboratory and precursor chemicals believed to be for drug manufacturing were found inside.
Drugs and guns were seized during the raids, with eight other people now in custody for trafficking large quantities of drugs.
The raid forced University Park Primary School to be put into lock down, and neighbours forced to evacuate.
Jennifer Quirk, who lives three doors down from the house, said she heard the gunshots ring out.
"I didn't speak to anyone until I had to take my kids to school about 8am and they had to escort me out of the house," Ms Quirk said.
