A real estate agent has been left bloodied after he was attacked with a hammer during an attempted carjacking in Melbourne’s north-east.

Keith Chan, 26, was returning home from a night out when two men rear-ended his car on Bulleen Road, about 1am.

Mr Chan had pulled over to get the details of the other vehicle when one of the offenders lunged at him with a hammer.

The victim was restrained aside his car and punched in the face several times.

He then collapsed and was unable to respond when one of the men demanded his keys before they kicked him in the back of the head.

The pair stole Mr Chan’s wallet from his car and fled the scene in their own vehicle.

“I got chased down with a knife also. It was scary,” he told 9NEWS.

“It’s been tough, but I’m glad I’m alive.”

Mr Chan was taken to the Austin Hospital and received stitches in his forehead.

His alleged attackers are described as having a southern European appearance, with full dark beards.

They are both believed to be aged between 25 and 30 years old, police said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
