The NSW government is about to begin work to criminalise the non-consensual sharing of explicit sexual images, according to reports.

Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton has indicated that criminalising "revenge porn" and other sexual images that are shared without consent will be part of her response to the results of a parliamentary inquiry into privacy laws, the ABC reports.

"Distributing intimate images without consent often involves ex-partners seeking revenge," she told the broadcaster.

Ms Upton said the government would soon begin consulting with experts for advice on defining what images will be affected, the appropriate penalties for sharing them, and how the laws should apply to children.
