A surgeon says a German backpacker’s scalp was “exposed” after she was allegedly struck on the head with a hammer by a man on a remote South Australian beach.
Reconstructive surgeon Andrew Raymond gave evidence on today, telling the court how he operated on the scalp of the German woman who was “incredibly lucky” her injuries weren’t more severe.
He said the woman had four “tearing lacerations” to her scalp which were up to 5.5 cm and caused by blunt force trauma - consistent with being hit with a hammer.
A 60-year-old man is on trial in the SA Supreme Court accused of attacking the young woman and another female backpacker at Salt Creek, east of Adelaide, in February 2016.
The trial continues before a jury of eight men and four women.
