A German backpacker who was violently attacked by a man at a remote South Australian beach has thanked the "good samaritans" who helped her to survive the ordeal.

The tourist, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was hit over the head with a hammer four times and repeatedly rammed with a 4WD by a 60-year-old man at Salt Creek, east of Adelaide, in February 2016.

Her accused attacker also tied up and sexually assaulted a Brazilian backpacker on the rugged sand dunes.

A group of young Victorian fishermen and roadhouse owners helped both the 24-year-old women escape to safety.

In a statement read by SA Commissioner for Victims' Rights Michael O'Connell, the German woman expressed her gratitude to those who came to her aid that day.

"She knows she survived because other people - good samaritans - came to her aid," Mr O'Connell said outside the SA Supreme Court.

"She would like to thank very much Adam and Anne of the Salt Creek Roundhouse, the fishermen Max, Nick, Tom, Jack and Andre who rescued her."

The fishermen gave evidence during the trial, stating they saw the woman covered head-to-toe in blood as she stumbled towards them on the beach into their arms.

A family visiting Salt Creek helped the Brazilian woman when she came running onto the road naked and distraught after the attack. The German national acknowledged them too.

"She thanks the Mohammed family - Ali, Abdul, Karim, Yousef, Abdulla - who also were involved in the rescue of both young women," Mr O'Connell said.

"She wants everyone to know that the people of Salt Creek are amazing, and she was and remains overwhelmed by their humanity."

The German woman gave evidence in court, stating she “thought she was going to die after the first hammer blow”.

She watched on for the remainder of the trial until the verdict.
