Rare cancer drug added to PBS as prices cut for more than 1000 medications

Hundreds of thousands of Australians are set to benefit from the latest changes to the PBS, which will see prices cut for 1100 medicines.

From April 1, patients with high cholesterol, Parkinson's disease, depression, breast cancer and eczema will play less for their medicaion.

Brentuximab vedotin, sold as Adcetris, was one of several medicines added to the PBS by the federal government on Saturday.

It is used to treat a rare subtype of Hodgkin lymphoma often affecting young people.

Prior to listing, it could cost patients tens of thousands of dollars for treatment at about $16,000 a cycle, Lymphoma Australia CEO Sharon Winton said.

The 500,000 Australians with high cholesterol can expect a $6.20 saving on their rosuvastatin prescription.
