A man was arrested near the US Capitol Wednesday after he drove into a police vehicle and then tried to run over several other officers who were on foot, police said.

Police said the incident appeared unrelated to terrorism.

"At some point, Capitol police apparently fired shots, but no one was struck," the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. "The individual has been taken into custody."

"This incident appears to be criminal in nature with no nexus to terrorism, and in addition the Capitol complex remains open to the public," Capitol Police communications director Eva Malecki told reporters.

Police fired shots during the incident, which occurred just a block from the Capitol complex, but no one was injured and the suspect, described by police as an "erratic and aggressive driver."
