The jury in the murder trial of Sydney property developer Ron Medich has been discharged after it was unable to reach a verdict.

Mr Medich, 69, was accused of ordering the shooting murder of his former business associate Michael McGurk.

Mr McGurk was shot in the head outside his luxury home on Cranbrook Avenue in Cremorne on September 3, 2009.

After hearing seven weeks of evidence and deliberating for more than a fortnight, Justice Geoffrey Bellew discharged the NSW Supreme Court jury today after they could not reach a unanimous or majority verdict.

Mr Medich denies he financed the contract killing of Mr McGurk and directed his former friend Lucky Gattellari to organise the shooting.

He also denied intimidating Mr McGurk's widow in August 2010.

It was alleged Mr Medich's close friendship with Mr McGurk disintegrated in 2008 when their business ventures went sour.

The pair ended up suing each other for millions of dollars over what each claimed they were owed by the other.

Mr Medich will remain on conditional bail, with a retrial likely.
