A major police operation is underway after a police officer was shot on the central Parisian boulevard of Champs Elysees.
The attacker was also killed in the shooting, a spokesperson for France's Interior Ministry confirmed to France 24.
There have since been unconfirmed reports of a second shooting at a location near Champs Elysees Boulevard.
The spokesperson told BFM TV police officers were deliberately targeted in the attack, which is believed to have occurred as officers guarded the entrance to the metro station nearby.
French police said it was "probably" a terror attack, but have not confirmed it.
The shooting comes just days before France’s presidential election, where terrorism is a hotly-debated topic.
Authorities are advising people to stay clear of the area, and several metro stations including The George V and Champs-Elysées-Clemenceau are closed.
