Labor Senator Sam Dastyari may have a fresh band of followers, as a viral trend calling on people to “put out your Halal snack packs” gains traction on Twitter.
Senator Dastyari resigned from the shadow frontbench positions of consumer affairs spokesman and manager of opposition business in the senate, following revelations he allowed a Chinese donor to pay a personal debt.
The man who gave the humble kebab, chip and three-sauce combo a nation-wide boost of appreciation is being honoured by the trend, as supporters post photos of the snack packs as a tribute to him.
The official Facebook group, which launched the social media movement following the snack pack's inclusion on official Hansard, did not forget the senator.
"Just wanted to share this photo of the first HSP I had and acknowledge the effort and time Sam Dastyari has put into this group," one member said, attaching a picture of their styrofoam-boxed meal.
Senator Dastyari used a Senate speech earlier this year to review a kebab shop’s offering. He also caused headline waves after inviting anti-Halal senator Pauline Hanson out for a snack pack.
