A young Tasmanian woman whose boyfriend allegedly threw fuel on her and set her alight is responding to medical treatment, relatives say.

Nicole Evans, 20, was airlifted to Melbourne in a critical condition on Tuesday and will require extensive treatment.

She suffered burns to more than 50 percent of her body and remains in an induced coma at The Alfred Hospital.

A friend of Ms Evans, Leslie Chambers, reported yesterday she is slowly recovering.

Posting on a Go Fund Me page set up for Ms Evans on Sunday, Leslie Chambers said: "I am pleased to be able to report - having just been speaking with Nicole 's mother - that she is responding to sound and moving her limbs."

"Her eyes are also moving under her eyelids. Her immediate family are relieved to witness this progress."

A hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday night she was still in a critical but stable condition, reports the Daily Mail.

The fundraising page has raised almost $22,000 to date.

Police alleged Matthew John Davey, 34, doused her with an accelerant and set her alight in a backyard shed.

He has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and other matters.

Davey is due to appear in the Supreme Court of Tasmania on June 13.
