The one word phone scammers want you to say

Cyber criminals around the world are launching daily attacks on elderly Australians in the hopes they will say just one word.

What they want is to record you saying yes.

"Hello, can you hear me?" a scammer will ask, in the hopes the person they are calling responds "yes".

"The scammer then ends the call. It is believed that the scammer is recording your 'yes' response and that this recording is being used to authorise payments or charges – in your name," Senior Constable Steve Smith of the Queensland Police Service said.

If scammers already have personal details, such as your phone number and address, a simple 'yes' may be all they need to start raiding your bank accounts.

Senior Constable Smith said the scam had been prolific in the US and UK since early this year.

Considering Australia is the second-most targeted country globally, behind the UK, when it comes to cyber scams, it comes as no surprise to authorities that it has finally hit our shores.

To combat the scam, Queensland Police recommend hanging up immediately if you receive a phone call in which the person on the other end of the line asks if you can hear them.

If you have responded by saying yes, Senior Constable Smith urges you to contact your bank immediately, start monitoring your accounts closely and contact ID Care.
