A dog whose owners failed to trim his fur over six years has received an astonishing makeover, thanks to his new foster carer.

Seven-year-old Great Pyrenees, Lazarus, was recently handed into the care of Virginia-based Big Fluffy Dog Rescue (BFDR) representative Amanda Brook Charsha-Lindsey, after his terminally ill owners proved unable to care for him.

The dog is believed to have spent the entirety of his life in a filthy barn stall, and never received a haircut, ABC US reports.

As a result he suffered from a severely overgrown coat, a condition made all the worse by his inability to move around and shed hairs.

Ms Charsha-Lindsey said that after taking Lazarus to see a dog groomer, he lost a total of 16kg in excess hair.

She said she has just begun breaking the pooch into his new life.

"We’re having to rebuild his muscles back and get him to a normal gait and we will get him to a point where he can walk and run with some sort of ease," she told ABC US.

"Right now he has to think about every step he takes."
