A married Perth couple have died and their son is fighting for life after a car which was earlier being pursued by police crashed into their vehicle in the suburb of Warwick last night.
Officers were attempting to stop a white Ford on Warwick Road about 7.30pm when the driver allegedly sped off and crashed into a Nissan Pulsar at the intersection of Warwick and Ballantine Roads, police said.
The Kingsley couple, a 60-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man, were passengers in the Nissan and died at the scene.
Their 25-year-old son, who was driving the Nissan, was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital and remains in a critical condition.
Police at the Internal Affairs Unit and the Major Crash unit are both investigating.
"On the basis of information known to me at this point, the officers had good reason for attempting to stop that vehicle," Deputy Commissioner Stephen Brown told reporters today.
Mr Brown said initial investigations had determined the pursuit had ended before the crash happened.
"What I do know is that our officers in that vehicle were appropriately trained and the class of vehicle that they were travelling in was right within our policies," he said.
The 16-year-old driver of the Ford allegedly fled the scene, but was later arrested by police.
His passenger, an 18-year-old woman, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with minor injuries.
