Driver who fatally hit elderly woman had insomnia, police say

The man charged after allegedly driving through a red light and fatally hitting an elderly woman had insomnia, police have told a Melbourne court.

Police today alleged the Ethiopian man had not slept for four days when drove his ute through a red light and struck the 72-year-old woman.

She and her 74-year-old friend were crossing McIntyre Road in Sunshine North around 7.10pm when they were hit by the man’s car, police told the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court.  

Both women were taken to hospital, but the 72-year-old woman later died.

The man was arrested at the crash scene and charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The 74-year-old woman remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Prosecution have opposed the man’s bail after he expressed a wish to return to Ethiopia.
