Democrats are in shock as Republican candidate Donald Trump secured a shock victory over Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States.
Democrat supporters who had gathered at a glittering reception in New York expecting to hear a victory speech from Ms Clinton fell quiet and jabbed nervously at their phones.

Ms Clinton acknowledged earlier today the battle was unexpectedly tight given her edge in opinion polls going into Election Day.
This evening she phoned Mr Trump to concede defeat.

Mr Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway is describing the atmosphere as "buoyant."
