Salim Mehajer has been arrested on the party island of Ibiza after a heated argument with a taxi driver over food spilled inside the car.

A Current Affair has obtained exclusive vision of the controversial property developer being handcuffed by Spanish police on the side of the road.

It is understood the arrest took place on Friday evening (local time) when Mehajer and two of his friends got into a taxi.

As they began eating their takeaway food inside the car, ice cream and chips were said to have been spilled throughout the vehicle.

The driver became annoyed and a heated argument erupted.

The driver claims Mehajer attempted to kick him from the backseat, which is when he phoned police and pulled over to the side of the road and instructed the trio to get out and wait.

The footage shows the group first approached by two policemen on foot.

At first the encounter appears civil but soon one of the policemen becomes more animated.

Mehajer attempts to intervene, at one point signalling to show the officers something on his phone, before the trio are frisked, arrested and thrown into police vehicles.

The former Auburn deputy mayor is yet to comment on the arrest.

He has previously been prolifically posting images of his global adventure to Instagram.

"Life goes on in Ibiza town. Whilst every bar and club are closed during this season, the ocean remains. There is no better sound to hear than the ocean, the wind, and the rain all at once, late at night," he captioned one photograph.

His overseas jaunt comes only months after explosive videos obtained by A Current Affair revealed his abuse and threats to estranged wife, Aysha, after she moved out of the couple's palatial western Sydney home.
