A nine-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries after two school buses crashed south of Wollongong today, injuring 20 children.

The boy was "ejected" from the school bus during the multi-vehicle accident on Tongarra Road at Albion Park about 3.40pm AEDT.

Seven other children were also taken to hospital, with injuries ranging from bruises to fractures.

The buses were carrying students from the Illawarra Christian School when they collided, and three cars were also involved in the crash.

"A Premier Illawarra  bus accident occurred at 3.40pm today. The Shell Cove/ Flinders bus 172 and Warilla bus 188 will be delayed," the school said in a statement.

"Children on these routes will be late in arriving home. A staff member will accompany children on the route home. Concerned parents are welcome to contact the school office."

Police have confirmed that the drivers of the two buses will be subject to mandatory blood and urine testing.

Tongarra Road remains closed.
