Police have arrested two teenage girls after an allegedly stolen BMW was dangerously driven across north Melbourne this afternoon.
The grey BMW sedan was first spotted being driven erratically in Thomastown about 2pm.
Police pursued the car but the chase was terminated a short time later for safety reasons.
Soon after the vehicle stopped at an Aldi supermarket in Kilmore. The passengers, two teenage girls aged 14 and 17, were arrested inside the store, police said.
They are currently assisting officers with their enquiries and no charges have been laid.
The driver, believed to be a 15-year-old boy, and another passenger then drove off towards Heathcote on the Northern Highway.
Live video captured from the news helicopter shows the car hurtling down the highway, swerving to narrowly avoid a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road.
During the getaway the teenage driver, dressed in a black suit, stopped to steal fuel from petrol stations at least three times.
Police continue to monitor the car, although its current whereabouts is unknown.
