Trapeze artist Lisa Skinner is in hospital after falling during the first Brisbane matinee performance of Cirque du Soleil's new show Kooza.

The three-time Olympic gymnast was suspended on a ring at a height of several metres when she plummeted to the ground.

A shocked audience looked on as the 35-year-old initially didn't move before being assisted by stage crews and stretchered to an ambulance by paramedics.

She was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital conscious, breathing and in a stable condition.

Witness Samantha Hewton told 9NEWS the show was briefly interrupted before resuming once the performer had been assisted from the stage.

Associate company manager for Kooza, Jessica LeBouf told 9NEWS the "first response team reacted very quickly".

"The performer is responsive, is safe, and is under great medical care at the moment," she said.

Kooza premiered in Brisbane on Thursday.

Skinner spoke to 9NEWS just two weeks ago about her gravity-defying stunts.

"I'm kind of about seven or eight metres without safety actually. Spinning, doing tricks, in, out and around a hoop," she said.

"It's one of the only shows that Cirque has that people literally scream in terror, like the wheel of death, it's nuts."

Skinner remains in hospital.
