The RSPCA Queensland has appealed for drivers and residents to help save a loose dog with its mouth taped shut, after receiving reports of the animal near a highway south-west of Brisbane.

Truck drivers have reported seeing the German Shepherd cross near the Cunningham Highway at Aratula, west of Boonah, the RSPCA Queensland advised.

It was last spotted near a helipad in Aratula yesterday morning.

The animal welfare organisation said the dog could die of dehydration if not found soon, and urged people to keep watch for it.

"If its mouth is taped it won't be able to eat, and drinking would also be very, very difficult," RSPCA Queensland Inspector Laurie Stageman said.

"If it's not caught soon, it will be probably dehydrate and that's a horrible way to die."

The RSPCCA said the dog’s owners could face charges of animal cruelty and abandonment if found.

Anyone who has any information about the dog is urged to call the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL.
